'Tis the season of flower crowns, glitter, and posed pictures in the desert, also known as Coachella. And honestly, I wish I was there.
For those of you that don't know, Coachella is a giant, annual music festival that takes place in Indio, California. It began after Pearl Jam got into a fight with Ticketmaster over their service fees, claiming that the company was financially targeting fans and artists. Pearl Jam looked into new venues that didn't require Ticketmaster, and ended up in Indio, California at the Empire Polo Grounds.
Coachella officially launched in 1999 and has grown tremendously, to the point where the organizers turned it into two separate weekends in 2012. While the roots of Coachella surround music, it has grown to now feature art installations, and is a huge spot for bohemian-style fashion. And, it's always packed with celebrities and influencers. It's crazy to see how the festival has changed over the years.
The music festival plays out across five main stages: the Coachella Stage, Outdoor Theater, Gobi Tent, Mojave Tent, and the Sahara Tent. Smaller artists and bands play throughout the day, leading up to evening performances by major headliners.
However, a lot of people are saying going to Coachella doesn't mean what it used to. It's now considered a lifestyle destination. Now, performances are curated in order to be live streamed. While it provides an "experience" for those that are there, it also creates something that can go viral, like Beychella last year (to the point where it's getting its own Netflix doc).
On the other hand, Coachella still seems pretty fun — I love looking at the highlights each year. So far, I have to admit these three are my favorites from this weekend:
1: DJ Snake brought out Selena Gomez, Cardi B and Ozuna to perform 'Taki Taki' — I don't know what I did to deserve this one, but I was so excited when I woke up and saw the video of their performance. This is Selena's first performance in a while, and if you know me, she's my girl!
2: Billie Eilish performed 'bury a friend' — and not to anyone's surprise, it was angsty, somewhat horror themed, and insanely hype
3: Kacey Musgraves brought the 'yee-haw' to California — and I think we're all here for it.
