One of my favorite things about music is how it brings people together from all around the world — or in this case, Ohio and New Jersey. I met Nancy through mutual friends a couple of years ago at a concert in Atlanta. This week, I asked her a few questions about her experience working in the music industry. She works in Digital Marketing Operations at Atlantic Records in New York City.
- What's a misconception people have of the music industry?
The biggest thing that people misconstrue is that they think the music industry is all fun and games and that it's easy. They also think you don't make any money and that it is a profession for unintelligent people. Some also believe that all we do is go to concerts, but in reality we're sitting at our desks for 60+ hours a week.
- What's your favorite thing about working in entertainment?
My favorite thing about working in entertainment is that I was able to find a company where I love the clients and my co-workers. We're all like-minded people that love music. I also love being able to see my work impact so many people across the globe.
- How did you break into the industry?
I interned at 8 different companies and made myself extremely marketable in college. I loved music growing up, so it was a way to combine my passion and career.
- Biggest lesson(s) you've learned so far?
The biggest thing I have learned is that this industry is extremely small, and everyone knows everyone. Never leave someone with a sour taste in their mouth about you.
